Back on 2 wheels

Today I decided it was about time I got back into cycling, and as I had to visit my mother-in-law and the weather is good I thought it would be an idea time to do so (and it’s about time I made a blog post other than pet arrivals/departures) 😉

I cycled the 13.05 miles in 1:15:37 of actual cycling, at an average speed of 10.35mph and a peak speed of 25.36mph (through a 20 zone – oops!).

My stamina is still OK because I arrived home without being out of breath, but my power is all shot to hell because hills are difficult. I had to drop to the low front gear just to get up Greenway Road!

Traffic lights are worse than ever. Out of 39 sets of normal lights I was stopped at 22 of them (yes I know it’s unusual to see a cyclist stop at traffic lights, but I value my life) and 3 sets of pedestrian lights.

I was pleasantly surprised, almost stunned, when a taxi stopped ahead of me before turning left to allow me to pass! There is hope for us all yet!

There are still idiots out there though, including the one driver who passed me before a narrows just to stop right in front of me because he couldn’t get through.

All in all a pleasant trip, and the free cyclometer I got from Kellogg’s is very well featured, if a bit bulky. I’ll see what the weather’s like tomorrow before doing it again though, I don’t fancy getting all wet in the process 😉

Meet Matt.

Matt

I’m way overdue with this post! Matt actually joined our family on June 10th, and was very nervous at first, as they all are. He’s now settling down nicely but is another one who loves to spend hours in his wheel making lots of noise 😉

R.I.P. Peanut

Peanut was taken ill on Sunday and we thought she was dying then but she brightened up and has been fine until tonight. I just checked the cage and she was curled up in her house with eyes open. Loss of another friendly hamster 🙁

R.I.P. Socks

On 9th May our neighbour asked if we were missing a cat because she saw one lying dead in the lane. It was Socks, our 9 year old tabby. I’m pretty cut up about this because he was a truly friendly cat who would purr at just being stroked. You will not be forgotten 🙁

Meet Caramel

To replace cream we bought Caramel. He’s a lovely little thing and quite a saving on power since we put a generator on the wheel 😉

R.I.P. Cream

Today our “old man” hamster passed away in his sleep. He was lively up to the end, despite being 2½ years old. Longest lived hamster we’ve had so far.

R.I.P. Snowy.

I’ve been really busy lately so only just getting around to reporting the sad loss of our white budgie Snowy, which happened last week. Bluey’s been quiet of late, but is chirping away merrily in his cage at the moment so hopefully he’s over the loss.

Meet Chopra.

Chopra the Hamster

Today we had a new addition to the family, bringing the hamster total back to 5. Chopra (named after the Cardiff City striker) is a little sweetie so far. I must say we’ve been lucky with hamsters and never had one that wasn’t friendly 🙂

R.I.P. Toffee.

Almost 2 years old and with completely knackered eyes being the symptom of something more serious, Toffee, was put to rest last Monday. Although it’s always sad to lose a pet, he was a good age for a hamster.

R.I.P. Auntie Barbara

Last Friday, after a short stay in hospital, my auntie passed away in her sleep, aged 82.

A warm hearted person, she’ll be missed 🙁

Funeral arrangements still forthcoming. I’ll update when finalised.
