A Little Update

Just not had much time to post much lately, even on regular social media so what have I been up to?

I now have a Stream Deck… clone. It’s a Mirabox 293S 15 button “Stream Dock” which I’m connecting with the OpenDeck software which runs native on Linux. I’m very pleased with this device and it was about a third of the cost of the equivalent ElGato Stream Deck so all good here!

A Mamemeister meet-up at Leeds Arcade Club.

I travelled up on the Friday with my son, Harry. Charged once at a service stop and had to park away from the hotel because there was no parking at the hotel itself. I wasn’t paying the extortionate price near the station so found one a few minutes walk away at a much more reasonable cost. There is a low power charger at the Arcade Club card park so I charged there while I enjoyed myself. Got to 93% before we left.
Something I ate upset my stomach though, probably garlic in the Korean fried chicken. It didn’t spoil the weekend but I did feel a bit awkward being unable to eat on Saturday night!
On the way home we stopped once and charged to 60% which was easily enough to get home after a great weekend with great mates.

The First UK Kong Off at Bury Arcade Club.

I initially planned to only attend on Saturday but a few weeks ago decided to stay for the even itself but couldn’t extend my stay as the web site and app were giving odd error messages so I left it until I got there. More on that soon.
Travelled up on the Friday with my wife, one stop at a service station and the charge took 15 minutes to get to 80% so was complete before we even left the building!
Got to Bury and asked about extending. They couldn’t do it at the desk but advised I do so by booking a new day via the app or website. The app was completely useless so website it was. I booked the extra day but there were now no rooms of the same type available so we had to check out by 10am Sunday and check back in after 3pm! A pain in the arse but we worked around it and made the best of it.
There’s a fast charger at the pub next door so I charged up there to 100% at a reduced weekend rate while we had a nice meal.
Saturday was the Farcade Meet-Up, games were played, chats were had and beer was drunk (after taking the car and wife back to the hotel and walking back to Arcade Club). To get back to the hotel I reinstalled Uber and got some discounted rides. I used this again Sunday and uninstalled when I’d finished with them for the weekend. I really don’t like the app on my phone!
Sunday was the Kong Off itself with 32 competitors over 8 Donkey King cabinets. There’s plenty of video online so I won’t give a full review but I will say it was a fantastic event and also gave plenty of time to actually chat with people I normally only chat in passing at other events. I’m really glad I extended the stay so absolutely no regrets whatsoever and I will definitely be making it a priority visit next time.
Getting home I decided not to top up charge, left with 93% and got home at 14% so plenty of wiggle room.
On the way home my wife wanted to do a bit of shopping in Manchester so I headed for the Trafford Centre and boy what a pleasant surprise. A huge car park with loads of space right at the centre and free! Here in Cardiff it’s a major headache to find a parking space in tight, multi-story car parks that cost a fortune, and they wonder why nobody wants to go shopping here!

Today I changed the brake pads and rear cassette on my bike. This was far easier than I expected! I do also need to change the chain but cannot find the chain tool so that will have to wait. I shall get that done next weekend when I have some more time off.

So there we go, quite the update! No so little but all in a single post 😉

Music: Synthmix

Recorded to cassette tape many years ago and now sampled for your listening pleasure.
This was a single executable that originated on an Amiga coverdisk or PD disk; my memory is hazy.

Audio: Arsewipe Comedy Advert

I first heard this as an Amiga demo many years ago. I found a much better quality recording on YouTube but the imagery involved isn’t really what I want to post publicly, so here it is without the graphics 😉

Song: Gangnam Style – English Interpratation

Let’s get this out of the way first: I CAN NOT SING! (though it obviously doesn’t stop me trying) 😉

This is an English language interpretation of Psy’s Gangham Style, not a direct translation.

Song: F*ck You All by Me!

I got so fed up of hearing the F~~k It song by Eamon, and the follow up by his supposed ex, that I decided to produce my own version.

I put out a call for a backing track, being unable to find one myself, and Daisy (Danny Tuppeny) arranged one for me. Then I got to work on the lyrics, the ideas for which have been percolating around my head for a while.

I hope you like the result. It’s entitled “F*ck You All”, of course if you don’t like it then you know what you can do! 😉

Song: Covers by Me!

While listening to the song Louise by the Human League a while back, the words “As if we were still lovers” seemed to transpose themselves in my mind to “I’m sick of all these covers” so for some strange reason I decided to complete the whole song with my own lyrics.

I searched high and low for a backing track but couldn’t find one so I decided to create it myself using a tracker program called Madtracker 2. After much fiddling getting the baseline right I found I just couldn’t get the main backing sounding anything other than awful and realised it’s because I have no idea how to use chords. A little help from a friend of mine (thanks Liz) and I had the chords for most of the song. I got the last help just before Christmas 2005, then things got too busy and I upgraded and lost the original tracker file I’d been working on! Anyway, months later I finally get around to thinking of completing it so put out a call for the original, which I was sure I gave to a few people, and thanks once again to Liz I had something I could work with, which I’ve now finally completed!

I know I still can’t sing so take appropriate precautions regarding glass, etc. before you start. I also hold no responsibility for any panicing animals or mental illness brought on by my voice , nor any other unfortunate incidents. You play this as your own risk! I apologise unreservedly to the Human League for “Covers”, but hope you enjoy it anyway and sympathise with its message 😉

SoundCloud Breach

Yesterday I had a scam email sent via the address I only use for SoundCloud so I went searching and found >> this << piece of information.

I’ve tried to reach out to them to find out why I wasn’t informed that my personal details were in that breach so I could take appropriate actions before crap like this happened.

Enter the AI Chatbot Otto.

It was an absolute nightmare trying to get it to put me through to the right place and I’m still not sure I was successful. I was supposed to get an email with a support ticket number but nothing so I chased it up today; it’s apparently still open awaiting an actual human to look into it.

In the meantime I’m going to host my meagre 6 tracks here and this site will now host any future music from me if I ever get the whim to create any more.

I have already changed the email address associated with my account and deleted the old one so it’s now invalid but if they don’t give me a satisfactory response I shall simply delete my account there and be done with it. Mistakes are made but not actually informing their users of the breach is not a mistake, it’s at best incompetence and at worse deliberate concealment.

Song: Let Me Forget by Me!

Just before Superbowl 2012, Madonna released a new track – Give Me All Your Luvin’. The chorus just triggered off something and caused me to lose… something, so I decided to put some new lyrics to it.

Rules of The Game:
1) You are playing The Game (there are no exceptions).
2) If you think about The Game, you lose.
3) Loss must be announced.

Desktop Arcade Setup So Far

I still need to design and build the rest of the cabinet but here is what I have so far.

The main guts sit in the base and are secured. The display controller and audio amp will be affixed to the rear of the cabinet in upcoming builds. The draw holding the keyboard does pull out so the keyboard is stored when not in use and available when needed. The screen is rotatable and seen here in a vertical orientation for Bomb Jack.

It’s all working well so far and I’m very pleased with progress but I do need to get some more blue filament before I can build the rest of the bottom part. Due to nearby events and occasions this will have to wait a month or two!

3D Printer AMS Fix

Today I learned how to disassemble the AMS for my 3D printer. This is the “Automatic Material System” that allows up to 4 different filaments to be used in single print (more if you daisy chain them).

The red filament got wedged solid. Well solid enough that I was not prepared to put any more force into trying to pull it out so I went searching and found how to disassemble it to clear such jams.

It turns out it was really simple, once I’d located the correct tool! It’s just 2 screws and the main assembly lifts out. This also gave me a chance to clean out the spilled desiccant beads but I did have a problem afterwards in that I’d taken out one of the active support shaft assemblies and misplaced it. It turns out I’d put it with the phone tools I’d got out while looking for the correct tool to undo the screws! This is essential for cleanly rotating the spool as the filament is fed or unloaded.

I now have a new bezel printed for my desktop arcade project. Here are two photos showing front and back. Front shows my reflection taking the photo (unavoidable) and the back shows gaps that will hold the magnets that will keep the bezel in place in the case surround. It’s designed to be square so rotatable to match game orientation. The screen is an iPad 3 screen connected to an HDMI/VGA display controller, both obtained from Ali Express.
