{"id":796,"date":"2019-01-18T16:52:05","date_gmt":"2019-01-18T15:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.colinjones.co.uk\/?p=796"},"modified":"2019-01-18T18:56:10","modified_gmt":"2019-01-18T17:56:10","slug":"thought-of-the-day-sci-fi-impossibilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.colinjones.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/01\/18\/thought-of-the-day-sci-fi-impossibilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Thought of the Day &#8211; Sci-Fi Impossibilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>My mind drifted into science and science fiction today, as it does, and I thought, &#8220;What science fiction technology is likely to be completely impossible?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s my list:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Faster than light travel.<\/li><li>Traversable wormholes.<\/li><li>Time travel to the past.<\/li><li>Travel to another universe (assuming any exist).<\/li><li>Miniaturisation &#8211; not making things small like microcomputers, but making existing things smaller without loss of mass or structure.<\/li><li>Any manipulation of the curvature of space time outside the framework of General Relativity &#8211; so no anti-gravity and no warp drive.<\/li><li>Macro teleportation &#8211; quantum teleportation is a reality but I don&#8217;t see it scaling up. Even a full atom of significant atomic number would be so improbable as to be practically impossible.<\/li><li>Non Newtonian propulsion, eg. the disproven M-Drive.<\/li><li>Force fields that can protect from matter projectiles and energy weapons.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I could add to this with things like light sabres, but they&#8217;re more science fantasy than science fiction. I can discuss my reasons why I think the above will prove impossible, and I&#8217;m willing (hoping in many cases) to be proven wrong. I&#8217;ll also give my opinions on any other technology you can think of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The floor is open.
